“Down in Mobile, they’re all crazy, because the Gulf Coast is the kingdom of monkeys, the land of clowns, ghosts and musicians, and Mobile is Sweet Lunacy’s County Seat.”
So writes Mobile’s Renaissance Man, Eugene Walter, a screenwriter, poet, short-story author, actor, puppeteer, gourmet chef, cryptographer, translator, editor, costume designer, confidant of princesses, well-known raconteur and bon vivant, who immortalized the streets of his home–our home–in novels, short stories and screenplays read the world over. It’s an inspiration for our club, from our home atmosphere to our kit launches to our away trips, to our official hashtag, #SL1702.
Represent your club and your city with the brand new AFC Mobile scarf, just in time for the week of winter that we’re sure is coming at some point. This scarf features an argyle pattern with the club name on one side and Mr. Walter’s immortal appellation on the reverse, with the club’s Azalea crest and maroon and gold fringe. Perfect for Mardi Gras parades on Royal Street and for welcoming opponents to the wildest home atmosphere on the Gulf Coast, in the latest addition to and incarnation of Sweet Lunacy’s County Seat.
Wear the scarf on your travels, and bring the Good Times with you, just as Eugene Walter did as he traveled Europe with a box of Alabama clay in tow, bringing Mardi Gras to the courts of kings and queens. As noted on Eugene Walter’s headstone, the last laid in Mobile’s historic Church Street Cemetery, “When all else fails, throw a party.”
